Caring For Fabric/Cloth/Canvas/Vinyl Convertible Tops

Cleaning

When planning to wash your convertible top, it is best to choose a day that is warm and park your vehicle in a shady area. The warmth helps to dry the fabric more quickly but the sun will cause the cleaning supplies to dry on the cloth and cause an undesirable effect.

Wet the top thoroughly with clean water. Apply a shampoo made especially for convertible tops with a soft bristle brush and allow the shampoo to sit for about 5 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Repeat if necessary, paying special attention to heavily soiled areas.

After thoroughly rinsing the fabric top, spray a protective solution completely over it and allow the top to dry for about 10 minutes then buff with a clean soft cloth to eliminate any streaks.

If your convertible top is already clean, all that is needed to maintain it is a strong spray of clean water once a month. Vacuuming dust and debris from the top on a regular basis is a good practice regimen for the care of your convertible top. Using a lint roller on your fabric top is a great way to improve the appearance quickly.

By taking good care of your convertible top, you will save thousands of dollars on a replacement and you will find satisfaction and appreciation in the beauty of your convertible for many years. The average cost for replacing a convertible top is between $1500 – $3000 and will take approx 3 – 5 days to complete.

Caution

Common household cleaning products can be very harmful to your soft convertible top. Chemicals you should not use on or near your convertible top include ammonia, bleach, detergent, alcohol and vinegar. Detergents, bleach and harsh acids will quickly deteriorate fabric or vinyl, whereas ammonia and alcohol will dry the fabric and cloud the vinyl. Using the wrong cleaners can be a costly mistake. Use only products specifically made for cleaning your type of convertible top.

Many car wash shampoos contain gloss-enhancers. If a car wash shampoo contains gloss enhancers, the convertible top will absorb them and become a dust magnet.

Always wash the entire convertible top since spot cleaning will create rings and discoloured areas.

Protecting Your Convertible Top

Start with a clean, completely dry convertible top.

If possible avoid applying protectant on windy days or bring your car inside a garage. Even a light breeze will cause overspray and will also stir up dirt and dust that will be attracted to your convertible top before the protectant has a chance to dry.

Shake fabric convertible top protectant well before use and several times during application.

Hold can or bottle upright and spray evenly 16-18 inches from material and use a gentle sweeping motion. DO NOT SATURATE!

Allow to completely dry 10 minutes or longer between coats, preferably in the sun. Artificial heat can be used to speed drying time. Drying time may vary depending on weather conditions. Your convertible top MUST BE COMPLETELY DRY before applying the next coat of protectant.

Spray three, light even coats of fabric convertible top protectant allowing protectant to completely dry between coats.

Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe off any excess over spray on paint, trim or glass.

Following the manufacturer instructions of all products you will be using is extremely important for the care of your convertible.

  • Great customer service from receptionist and the owner! He acknowledged all my questions I’ve been inquiring and delivered answers I was looking for. Very professional and friendly service. I would recommend this place for anyone looking to have Sneezeguard installed in their vehicle especially if you’re an Uber Driver.

  • We had bought a used Boxster with original rear vinyl window. We took it to Vision and Mark walked us through what to expect. He is the real deal and spent time making sure our expectations were aligned with the services his shop could provide. If you want sugar coating or lipstick, this is not your spot. If you want honest work for your dollar and someone that works to better his customers car, you will not be disappointed. Thanks

  • Had a stone chip and leaking water from 2 places at top of windshield. Was told the repair price would be the same as a new windshield installation. Of course took that option. Friendly staff, quick service, excellent workmanship. Definitely a return if necessary and a recommendation to anyone from this customer.

    pop-up sunroof

    Pop-up Sunroofs

Pop-up sunroofs, which can only be manually activated to either their open or closed position and remain fixed in place, are the least expensive option. Available in acrylic, glass or matched-color steel, pop-up sunroofs usually have hinges on the front-facing side and a latch on the rear facing side. When the latch is released, the sunroof opens 3-4 inches, allowing air to flow through the vehicle.

    sliding sun roof

    Spoiler and Slider Sunroofs

There are two types of sliding sunroofs: the spoiler and the slider. The spoiler type sunroof slides back and forth on tracks mounted to the exterior roof of the vehicle. Spoiler sunroofs pop up and then slide back to create the opening in the vheicle and may be electrically or manually triggered. Available in acrylic, glass and matched-color steel panels. Sliding sunroofs have chaneels that are located between the vehicle headliner and the car roof, allowing the sunroof panel to "disappear" within the interior of the roof. They are usually triggered electronically and are avaialbe in acrylic, glass and matched-color steel panels.

    t-top sunroof

    T-top Sunroofs

T-tops sunroofs involve removing two sections of the car roof, keeping the center intact, and replacing them with moulded removable panels. Available in acrylic, glass and matched-color steel. These sunroofs are relatively expensive because of the extensive bodywork required so the panels fit properly and are popular on sports cars.

    targa sunroof

    Targa-style Sunroofs

Like T-top sunroofs, Targa-top sunroofs involve removing a large section of the car roof and replacing it with a moulded panel. However, on targa-type sunroofs, the middle section of the roof is also removed, allowing for a very large open space when the panel is removed. Available in acrylic, glass and matched-color steel. These sunroofs are relatively expensive because of the extensive bodywork required so the panel fits. Popular on sports cars.

    panormaic sunroof

    Panoramic Sunroofs

Normally, panoramic sunroofs are constructed in two or more panels that cover a large area of the car roof, usually over the front and rear seating areas. The panels usually slide in channels mounted on the car roof, one panel sliding over the other, but pop ups may be available for some cars. Normally, panoramic sunroofs are the most expensive to install because of the complexity of the their mechanisms and their sheer size. Available with an electric trigger and on some vehicles may be manually oeprated.
